This air fry salmon recipe gives you flaky, juicy salmon with lightly caramelized edges in about 10 minutes, with no flipping and almost no cleanup. A quick rub of olive oil, smoked paprika, garlic and a touch of honey goes on the fillets, then the air fryer’s hot, fast-moving air browns the top while the inside stays tender. It’s the easiest way to get a healthy salmon dinner on the table on a busy night.

Below you’ll find the ingredients, how long to air fry salmon by thickness, step-by-step instructions, the right internal temperature, tips, flavor variations and storage. The printable recipe card is at the bottom.

Why You’ll Love Air Fryer Salmon

  • Fast: 2 minutes of prep and 7 to 10 minutes of cooking.
  • No flipping: the circulating air cooks the fillet from all sides.
  • Moist inside, browned on top: the short, hot cook doesn’t give the fish time to dry out.
  • No fishy oven or splattering pan.

Ingredients for Air Fryer Salmon

  • Salmon fillets, 4 (about 6 oz / 170 g each), 1 to 1¼ inches thick, skin on or off. Center-cut fillets cook most evenly.
  • Olive oil or avocado oil, 1 tablespoon.
  • Honey, 1 tablespoon (optional; helps the top caramelize).
  • Smoked paprika, 1 teaspoon.
  • Garlic powder, ½ teaspoon, and onion powder, ½ teaspoon.
  • Diamond Crystal kosher salt, 1 teaspoon, or ½ teaspoon table salt.
  • Black pepper, ¼ teaspoon.
  • Lemon wedges and fresh dill or parsley, to serve.

Equipment You Need

  • An air fryer (basket or oven style). A 5- to 6-quart basket holds 2 to 4 fillets.
  • An instant-read thermometer.
  • A thin, wide spatula for lifting the fillets out.
  • Parchment liners for air fryers (optional, for easy cleanup; never preheat the air fryer with an empty liner inside, as it can blow into the heating element).

How to Make Air Fryer Salmon (Step by Step)

1. Prep the salmon

Take the salmon out of the fridge 10 to 15 minutes before cooking. Pat it very dry with paper towels. If one end is much thinner, tuck the thin tail under so the fillet is an even thickness.

2. Season

Stir the oil, honey, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper together in a small bowl. Brush or rub it over the top and sides of each fillet.

3. Preheat

Preheat the air fryer to 390°F (200°C) for 3 to 5 minutes. Lightly oil the basket, or add a perforated parchment liner once it’s hot.

4. Air fry

Place the fillets in a single layer, skin side down, with space between them. Air fry for 7 to 10 minutes, without flipping, until the top is browned and the salmon flakes easily. Start checking at 6 minutes.

5. Check the temperature

Slide a thermometer into the side of the thickest fillet. Fish is fully cooked to the food safety guideline at 145°F (63°C), when it’s opaque and flakes easily with a fork. Many cooks take salmon out at 125°F to 130°F (52°C to 54°C) for a moister, medium center; that’s below the guideline, so cook it to 145°F for anyone pregnant, young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Our salmon internal temp guide has the full doneness chart.

6. Rest and serve

Let the salmon rest for 2 to 3 minutes; the temperature rises a few degrees. Serve with lemon wedges and fresh herbs. If the skin sticks, slide the spatula between the skin and the flesh and lift the fillet off, leaving the skin behind.

How Long to Air Fry Salmon

SalmonTemperatureTime
Thin fillets, ¾ inch (2 cm)390°F (200°C)5 to 7 minutes
Standard fillets, 1 to 1¼ inches (2.5 to 3 cm)390°F (200°C)7 to 10 minutes
Thick fillets, 1½ inches (4 cm)375°F (190°C)10 to 13 minutes
Salmon bites, 1-inch cubes400°F (200°C)6 to 8 minutes, shaking once
Frozen fillets, 1 inch (no thawing)390°F (200°C)12 to 15 minutes; season after the first 5 minutes

Times are for 145°F; take about 2 minutes off for a medium center. Air fryers vary in power, so trust the thermometer over the clock.

Tips for the Best Air Fryer Salmon

  • Dry the fish. Moisture on the surface steams and stops browning.
  • Don’t crowd the basket. Leave at least ½ inch between fillets so hot air can circulate. Cook in batches if needed.
  • Same-size fillets cook evenly. Ask the fish counter for center-cut pieces, or take smaller fillets out first.
  • Watch the honey. Sugar browns fast. If the top darkens before the center is done, lower the heat to 360°F and cook a minute or two longer.
  • Wild salmon cooks faster. Lean sockeye or coho can be done 1 to 2 minutes sooner than farmed Atlantic salmon. Learn more in our guide to wild caught vs farmed salmon.
  • Keep it clean and cold. Keep raw salmon in the fridge until you season it, and wash hands, boards and the seasoning brush after handling it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the preheat. A cold basket means a longer cook and a paler top. Three to five minutes of preheating makes the timing in this air fry salmon recipe reliable.
  • Cooking very different sizes together. A thin tail piece will be overcooked by the time a thick center cut is ready. Group fillets by size, or pull the small ones early.
  • Using cooking spray on a nonstick basket. Aerosol sprays can build up and damage the coating. Brush on oil, or use an oil mister.
  • Cooking straight from the fridge with a sugary rub. The outside burns before the cold center warms through. Let the fillets stand for 10 to 15 minutes first.
  • Guessing doneness. One minute too long is the difference between juicy and dry. A thermometer takes the guesswork out.

Is Air Fryer Salmon Healthy?

Yes. Salmon is rich in protein, omega-3 fats, vitamin D and B vitamins, and the FDA lists it among its “Best Choices” for low mercury in its advice about eating fish. Air frying needs only a tablespoon of oil for four fillets, far less than pan-frying. For an even lighter version, skip the honey and serve the salmon with steamed vegetables and brown rice.

Easy Flavor Variations

  • Lemon garlic butter: skip the honey and paprika. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder, and spoon 1 tablespoon melted butter mixed with lemon zest and juice over each fillet after cooking.
  • Teriyaki: brush with 2 tablespoons thick teriyaki sauce for the last 2 minutes. Top with sesame seeds and green onions.
  • Honey mustard: mix 1 tablespoon Dijon, 1 tablespoon honey and 1 teaspoon whole-grain mustard and spread over the fillets before cooking.
  • Cajun: use 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning instead of the spices and salt (most blends are salty).
  • Everything bagel: brush with oil and press 1 teaspoon everything bagel seasoning onto each fillet.
  • Pesto: spread 1 tablespoon basil pesto on each fillet in the last 2 minutes.

What to Serve With Air Fryer Salmon

  • Rice, quinoa or couscous
  • Roasted asparagus, broccoli or green beans (they can go in the air fryer first and stay warm while the salmon cooks)
  • A cucumber and tomato salad
  • Mashed or roasted potatoes

How to Store, Freeze and Reheat

  • Refrigerate cooked salmon within 2 hours in an airtight container for 3 to 4 days.
  • Freeze cooked salmon, wrapped well, for up to 3 months for best quality. Thaw it in the fridge.
  • Reheat in the air fryer at 300°F (150°C) for 3 to 5 minutes, until hot (165°F / 74°C). Low heat keeps it from drying out. Or flake it cold into salads, rice bowls and pasta.
  • Raw salmon keeps 1 to 2 days in the fridge; freeze it if you won’t cook it by then.

These times follow the FoodSafety.gov cold food storage chart.

Air Fryer Salmon FAQs

How long do you air fry salmon at 400°F?

About 7 to 9 minutes for 1-inch fillets. At 390°F, allow 7 to 10 minutes. Check that the thickest part reaches 145°F, or 125°F to 130°F if you prefer it medium.

Do you flip salmon in the air fryer?

No. Cook it skin side down the whole time. The hot air cooks the top, and flipping can break the fillet.

Should I put salmon skin side up or down in the air fryer?

Skin side down. The skin protects the flesh from the hot basket and helps it stay moist.

Can I air fry salmon from frozen?

Yes. Rinse off any ice glaze, pat dry, air fry at 390°F for 5 minutes, then brush with the seasoning and cook 7 to 10 minutes more, until 145°F in the center.

Why is there white stuff on my salmon?

That’s albumin, a harmless protein that seeps out as the fish cooks. A lot of it means the salmon cooked too long or too hot.
